| Update on EU Referendum Debate
14.2.08
Some of you will know that we have begun to debate the EU Reform Treaty in the House of Commons. We were originally allocated 20 days’ of debate but the government have cut this to 12. This is not enough time to debate a treaty that gives away more powers and undermines the nation state. If this treaty goes through then MPs will become nothing but rubber stamping EU lawmakers.
One of the big issues here in Gravesham is immigration. One of the Treaty’s provisions is that all EU member states have to take a fairer share of the burden of immigration. This actually means that we would be compelled to take more immigrants and asylum seekers and, in addition, we would have to share a larger burden of the cost of this in monetary terms.
Also, the European Court of Justice would have supremacy over our laws. This country was built on Common Law that stretches back centuries and has served us well. We are not given our rights by treaties, conventions and charters as people are on the continent, we have our freedom because we were born with it. I hope this Treaty fails.
