| Praise for the unsung heroes of Gravesham
29.5.08
I get angry at dropped litter and graffiti which devalues and defaces Gravesham so I decided to join the street cleansing department of Gravesham Borough Council to understand a little more about how they deal with this anti-social behaviour.
Stuart Alford, manager of the department heads up a great team – Scott and Rob on the graffiti side and Ian, James and Bernard from the Green Machine street cleansing machines (the little vans with brushes attached that keep the streets clear of fag butts and dust).
But there is a serious financial side to this operation. Each year, you the council taxpayers contribute around £400,000 to operate this department who are literally clearing up after thoughtless people who drop their cigarettes, litter, fast food cartons and deface our walls, cemeteries and public areas with mindless graffiti. Spray cans are banned for sale from retailers to children so parents have to ask where their garage stored spray cans have gone and please think before you throw litter or cigarettes in the street as you are literally paying a hefty price.
