| Bin tax – your councillors should decide
3.7.08
Another week, another postcode lottery story - this time in connection with speculation surrounding the Government's EU enforced 'bin tax' proposals. A report commissioned by Asda has shown that, due to local variation in recycling facilities across the country, some areas will be expected to pay far more if and when "pay-as-you-throw" bin taxes are introduced. I argue that councils should put together a common policy on recycling to avoid such an eventuality. Your locally elected councillors of both parties in Gravesham should be deciding on such policy, not Whitehall.
People want to be green, it just needs to be made easy, not by EU diktats. I think this just illustrates the futility of trying to impose central solutions on what is essentially a local issue - town halls should be free to come up with their own localised waste disposal policies and be judged on the results at the ballot box.
